Billie Holiday. A Yiddishe Momme

Recording of the rehearsal version of A YIDDISHE MOMME by Billie Holiday. 1956

Images of Barbra Streisand. Billie Holiday and Judy Garland may be the two most influential vocalists that Barbra Streisand has admired.

She even credited the song FOR ALL WE KNOW included at the end of the film THE PRINCE OF TIDES to a CD of LADY IN SATIN given to her as a birthday gift by her son Jason Gould.

Barbra has never recorded a Yiddish song.

Maybe she sang a Yiddish song when she performed at THE CONCORD HOTEL in upstate New York ( The Catskills) in the early 1960s but it was never included in any album.

Barbra will appreciate Billie Holiday’s rendition of My Yiddishe Momme. Maybe someday Barbra will record this song in Yiddish and English. The song was a big hit for Sophie Tucker in 1928. Barbra’s mother, the late Diana Streisand Kind, had a good singing voice. She must have been influenced in the 1930s by the musical films of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.

Barbra’s mother recorded “One Kiss“, a song from a Jeanette MacDonald movie, but it has not been released . Barbra sang that song in the COLOR ME BARBRA special. Barbra should follow Billie Holiday’s example and record A YIDDISHE MOMME. This song is known by many different names: “My yiddishe Momme” “Yiddish Mama” “A yiddishe Mama” ‘ my yiddishe mama‘ ‘ A idishe mama” “Mein yiddishe mame” Барбра Стрейзанд イディッシュ語 ברברה סטרייסנד
